Ruthin store and breeding stock sale - December 19

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 32 cattle to £1,110; 64 calves to £410; four OTM cattle to £1,050.80; 1,132 store lambs to £85; 16 stirks to £750 and 81 breeding ewes to £170.

Good entries were once again on show with 65 quality calves forward.

Over 15 buyers were present, with a real buzz around the ring.

Top price of the day went to Owen, Bodysgaw Isa at £410 for a 8 week old BB Bull.

Younger Blues to £260 for a 4 week old BB heifer from Jones Pengwern and £280 for a 4 week old BB Bull from Roberts, Bodynys.

Others from Roberts, Rossa Bach to £320 and £305 from Jones, Gables.

Store cattle (auctioneers: Emyr Lloyd and Glyn Owens):

Another exceptional trade on cattle.

Bryncir fatstock auction - December 18

THERE was an entry of 757 lambs, 133 Cull ewes and 18 Cull cows, with an exceptional trade in all sections ensuring a good send-off in the last fatstock sale of 2019.

Plenty of cull ewes cleared the £100 mark.

BARREN and cull cows (26):

A similar number of OTM cattle on offer during the week, seeing a top price of £1110.78 (153ppkg) for a British Blue x OTM weighing in at 726kg from RT & MSC Jones, Rhydyfaes.

The same home made 125ppkg for a Limousin x weighing 804kg making £1005. Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £1148.07 (147ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 781kg from Red House Farm. EM Tilsley & Son, Llandinier made 137ppkg for a Limousin x weighing 731kg making £1001.47.

Heifers under 48 months topped at £924.35 (139ppkg) for a heifer weighing 665kg from Red House Farm.

Averages of the day were as follows: OTM Cows (19) 109.13ppkg / £750.39; Cows 48-72 Months (6) 128.39ppkg / £897.44; Heifers Under 48 months (1) 139ppkg / £924.35; Overall Average 114.75ppkg.

Prime lambs (5,862):

A similar entry of lambs forward sold to return an average of 189.53ppkg, with a top price of 245ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 40kg from CJ & ME Williams, Minysarn, and £112/head for 48kg lambs from the same home.

Another good number of lambs on offer, sold to a good competitive trade throughout with trade remaining strong throughout the sale. Plenty of good quality lambs forward which again sold very well topping at 245ppkg with numerous other pens selling to above 220ppkg.

Any better bred, well meated pens of export and supermarket weight lambs (39-47 kilos) sold to 200ppkg and above.

Heavy weight lambs sold to a similar trade to the previous week with the very best types selling above £100 and any well fleshed 50+ kilo lambs selling at £90/head and above.

Lighter weight lambs found another very good demand especially for the better meated, better bred lambs with still quite a few of these types going back on farms as store lambs for further feeding.

Poorer bred small lambs still found a strong demand as the pre-Christmas export demand continued.

The only lambs difficult to sell were any overfat types.

Standards (1226) to 231ppkg from CJ & ME Williams, Minysarn. Others to 224ppkg from JM Rowlands, Dolwen Farm. Average of 192.94ppkg.

Mediums (2142) to 245ppkg from CJ & ME Williams, Minysarn. Others to 232ppkg from DE Morgan & Co, Cefntwlch. Average of 190.72ppkg.

Heavies (962) to 233ppkg from CJ & ME Williams, Minysarn. Others to 213ppkg from DE Morgan & Co, Cefntwlch. Average of 183.99ppkg.

Cull ewes (2,641):

The week we saw a stronger entry of 2,542 cull ewes that met a terrific trade from start to finish!

There were some fantastic runs of ewes forward, with 14 individual buyers present again.

The trade was well in line with the one the previous week with some ewes even dearer.

This would be the best trade seen on cull ewes this time of year for many years.

The overall average was £62.27 (up £18.60 on the same day last year), a fantastic average considering the amount of hill ewes forward, however, the average reflects the strong demand for these type of ewes as well as the heaviest ewes, with the best Welsh ewes reaching £83.50!

There was a shortage of the very best heavy Texel and Suffolk ewes, however, any amount of the best Texel x and Suffolk x ewes were £95+, Mule ewes £80+ and Welsh ewes £60+.

Top price of the day went to DWP Griffiths, Park Lodge that sold Blue Texel ewes at £120.

This was closely followed by JA Williams, Llechwedd Ddyrys that sold Texel x ewes at £119.

A total of 88 cull rams were present with an overall average of £73.55 and sold to £117 from Fachwen Farms, Tregynon.
