SCHOOLCHILDREN from Prestatyn and St Asaph will be ‘Over the Rainbow’ on a six-month long learning journey.

Once again, the players of Colwyn Bay's Magic Light Productions (MLP) will present a novel learning opportunity for pupils at St Asaph VP Infants and Bodnant Community School with 2020's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz themed Enrichfest event.

Each year, the 2020 Denbighshire Curriculum Enrichment Initiative brings an annual themed festival to schools, including competitions, workshops, showcases, takeovers and ‘pop-up’ theatrical performances, to engage children and young people in learning across the curriculum creatively, in new and innovative ways.

‘Over the Rainbow’ is based on the classic 1900 L Frank Baum children’s book, and will present learning opportunities for pupils centred on the adventures of Dorothy and her little dog Toto, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion, as they travel through the re-imagined world of Oz.

Denbighshire Curriculum Enrichment Initiative is a project run by Denbighshire County Council’s Education and Children’s Services to enhance pupils’ learning and supports young people, one of the Council’s priorities under its Corporate Plan.

Last year’s event – which also featured the Theatre Colwyn panto production company MLP – saw about 2,000 school pupils take part in a series of Alice in Wonderland themed ‘Cheshire Cat’ lesson activities, which provided props for a live performance.

This year, MLP will input work by Denbighshire schoolchildren into its ‘pop-up’ theatrical performances of ‘The Magic of Oz’, touring Denbighshire schools throughout June.

Also taking part in this year's event are pupils from Ysgol Bodfari, Ysgol y Parc, Ysgol Plas Brondyffryn, Ysgol Pendref, Ysgol Dyffryn Ial, Ysgol Carrog, Ysgol Caer Drewyn, Ysgol Borthyn and Rhos Street School.
