An inquest has been opened into the death of a Rhyl man whose body was found on the beach in Prestatyn.

A large-scale air and sea search was launched on January 17 after a woman reported seeing a man in the water near the Foryd in Rhyl.

The woman told police that she saw him waving his arms before he disappeared.

The coastguard helicopter, police divers and firefighters joined the search and then two days later a person walking between Prestatyn and Talacre spotted a body on the beach.

He was identified by his fingerprints as being Dean Paul Jones, 35, of no fixed address, who had been reported missing in Rhyl.

Home Office pathologist Dr Brian Rodgers gave a provisional cause of death as drowning but at the opening of an inquest in Ruthin John Gittins, coroner for North Wales East and Central, said further toxicology and histology tests were needed.

The inquest was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
