GOLFERS usually want sweeping fairways and millimetre-perfect greens, however a club in Ruthin has planted hundreds of daffodils to celebrate one of their long-time players.

Ladies members at Ruthin Pwllglas Golf Club marked the 90th birthday of Myfi Lewis by sowing 200 of the yellow flower bulbs near the 18th hole.

Mrs Lewis, a great-grandmother of two, has been a member of the club for 48 years and said she continues to practice her swing because “you can play golf at any age and there are such beautiful views”.

“I was really touched that the daffodils were for me,” she said. “It was absolutely lovely and all the members are very friendly.”

Mrs Lewis, a former Ysgol Brynhyfryd pupil, has played at courses across the UK, including St Andrews in Scotland, with an all-time best handicap of 14.

She was Ruthin’s Lady President from 2002 to 2005 and now plays off a higher handicap of 28, however in 2016 she won the club’s Ladies Captain’s Prize after decades of near attempts.

“I have been trying for over 40 years to win it so it was a relief to finally do it!” she said.

“Sometimes things go fantastically and other times you think you are just a beginner, but that is golf.”

Amid the ups and downs she has experienced during nearly a half-century of playing golf, Mrs Lewis said she would “recommend it to anyone”.

“People can play at any age and there are such beautiful views that you can just look out to. You can also relax and have a chat with your playing partner.”

Ruthin Pwllglas Golf Club has 10 holes for a different 9th and 18th hole, the latter being near a public footpath where the daffodils are planted.

Club member and plant organiser Brenda Roberts said Mrs Lewis is considered “an inspiration” by fellow players at the Ruthin course.

“You would never know Myfi is 90 if you met her because she is very active and everyone looks up to her,” she said.

“Myfi is a huge gardener and we couldn’t miss the opportunity to plant flowers to celebrate her birthday.”
