VISITORS can enjoy free access to one of the Vale of Clwyd’s favourite castles on St David’s Day.

In celebration of the patron saint of Wales, Cads will open the gates of Denbigh Castle free-of-charge on March 1.

The event will also mark Visit Wales’ Year of Outdoors which focuses on adventure, mindfulness and wellbeing.

Denbigh Castle was once the royal residence of Dafydd ap Gruffudd, whose attack on nearby Hawarden Castle provoked the English king Edward I to mount a full-scale invasion. By 1282 it was in the hands of the king’s commander, Henry de Lacy, who began to build a new walled town.

In 1400, Denbigh was attacked by Lancastrian forces and burnt.

Today the castle features an exhibition and audio guided tour, alongside a guidebook, Wi-Fi and gift shop.

Car park and bike access are available.

Denbigh Castle is open from 10am-4pm on Saturday and Sunday, with last admission 30 minutes before closing.

Book your free place on St David's Day at the Cadw website from Friday, February 21.
