A MEMORIAL service will be held next week for a popular councillor known as “Mr Corwen”.

Huw Jones, who represented the town on Denbighshire County Council since 2008, died last month after a lengthy illness.

Aged 62, he was actively involved in many community activities but was probably best known for his links with Corwen Football Club, where he was a coach and president.

Affectionately known as “Huw Chick”, the Plaid Cymru member was a board member of Menter Iaith Sir Ddinbych, Cadwyn Clwyd, Clwyd Pension Fund and the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty partnership.

A private funeral will be held on March 10 at Pentrebychan Crematorium, with a memorial service at Seion Chapel, Corwen, on Saturday, March 14 at 1pm.

Mourners are asked to wear red as a symbol of Huw’s support for Welsh teams, as he was a member of the “Red Wall” and was first taken ill during the Euro 2016 tournament.

Donations will be received towards the intensive care unit at Wrexham Maelor Hospital and Corwen Football Club.
