AN MP will return to the NHS during the coronavirus outbreak to help out with the additional pressures.

Dr James Davies, MP for Vale of Clwyd, has been a qualified NHS doctor for 16 years.

He is one of a number of medically-trained politicians who will be assisting as the pandemic takes hold; there is now more than 300 cases for Novel Coronavirus in Wales, although the true number of cases is likely to be higher.

Public Health Wales confirmed on Sunday, March 22 that 12 people in Wales - who tested positive for Covid-19 - have now died.

Dr Davies said: "Our NHS staff are doing incredible work during these challenging times and I commend each and every one of them. However, the system is sadly destined to become even more overstretched and I feel a duty to help it out.

“I will therefore be returning to help when I can, initially during the Easter recess and then beyond depending on need.

"I’ve spent 16 years working as a doctor and at this time of national crisis, I am very keen to support and stand by my colleagues. This will be in addition to my work as a Member of Parliament - itself more than a full-time job just at the moment. I want to assure my constituents that I will still be available to support and provide guidance for them.”

Dr Davies has been working with Health and Treasury Ministers, colleagues on the Health and Social Care Select Committee, Assembly Members and local health professionals in a bid to ensure people of all ages in the constituency are receiving the support and care they need amid the coronavirus crisis.

He has also been in contact with scores of constituents who are understandably anxious about the situation.

Dr Davies added: “This is a terribly worrying time for everyone, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, and I want to assure my constituents that I am doing everything that I possibly can to ensure that the best support and care is available to them here in the Vale of Clwyd.

“I have been in contact with health and treasury ministers over the approach to the situation and will remain in direct contact with them as the situation progresses, outlining any concerns fed to me by residents, and health and care professionals.

“I have also been in touch with Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, local primary care services, social care providers and Welsh Shadow Health Minister Angela Burns to discuss concerns and measures needed."
