A VALE of Clwyd high street was tipped to have among the best floral displays in Great Britain this summer, however due to the coronavirus outbreak the gardeners behind the plot have had to cancel their plans.

The RHS Britain in Bloom was due to visit Denbigh for the first time in its history after volunteer group Denbigh in Bloom planted arrangements along the High Street, roundabouts, public spaces and painted no fewer than 78 bollards.

The group had been preparing to compete in the prestigious competition, which features just 70 community gardening groups out of an, after it was awarded the best town in the Wales in Bloom competition last year.

However due to the coronavirus outbreak the competition has been cancelled and the group has had to halt its planting sessions that were set to take place in the coming months that would have included new raised beds and railing baskets, as well as brand-new displays on Factory Ward and Vale Street.

Lyndsey Tasker, chair of DIB, said: “All our schemes are taken care of and planted by volunteers, so we have to ensure that they are not at risk or posing a risk by being outdoors and in public spaces.

“All our schemes are paid for by sponsorships, contributions from grant funds, merchandise sales and generous people with their hearts in our lovely community.

“It's so disappointing for everyone associated with Denbigh in Bloom, but we have to ensure that we are not putting ourselves or others at risk.

“We want to reassure you that everything we had planned for 2020 will go ahead in 2021 and we will be putting Denbigh firmly on the map in both Wales and Britain in Bloom.”
