A POPULAR sporting competition has been cancelled for the first time since the Second World War.

Due to the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the decision has been made to cancel the 2020 Llandyrnog and District Summer League season.

A Summer League spokesman said: "Unfortunately, under the circumstances, the Summer League has been postponed this season."

While the league was going to miss its usual start date of the third week in April, initially there were hopes that a curtailed campaign could go ahead.

A Summer League season has not been cancelled since 1945.

Back in 2001, during the foot and mouth outbreak, most of the season was lost, but half of the campaign was completed and champions were decided.

Llangynhafal recovered from losing their opening two matches last season to win the league.
