SAINTS boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has revealed his pride in his players, who remain in solo training in their homes ahead of a possible restart to the halted Premier League campaign.

Hassemhuttl has been overseeing the training schedule from afar as he sees out the coronavirus crisis with his wife and children in Munich.

His team, meanwhile, are holed up in their homes across Hampshire and further afield completing running challenges, lifting weights, keeping fit and talking to coaches via video app.

“They’re really disciplined and do their job and their training at home,” he said.

It’s not easy for them because there is no motivation at the moment and they don’t know the exact target. It’s very different from a summer break as they don’t know when they can start again and it makes it difficult for them.

“But now it looks like there is light at the end of the tunnel and hopefully it won’t be too long until we are back on the pitch, maybe with smaller groups and strict rules like they are doing in Germany now.”

Hassenhuttl has been watching with interest the way in which German teams have returned to group training and are dealing with a likely restart to the Bundesliga in early May.

He suggests training sessions may take place at St Mary’s rather than Staplewood in the run up to any possible restart to the Premier League, to acclimatise players to a stadium without fans.
