The number of people who have tested positive for the coronavirus in Powys has reached more than 200.

Five new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the county, figures released by Public Health Wales confirmed today (May 10).

The total number of cases in the Powys Teaching Health Board area is 204. Across the county, 25 per cent of those tested for the virus have recorded a positive result.

There has been a total of 1,111 suspected deaths from the coronavirus reported in Wales, and there have been 11,344 confirmed cases across the country.

On Saturday, 2,017 tests were carried out with 223 new cases recorded in Wales today.

The true number of Powys residents with coronavirus is still likely to be higher, as will the number of deaths related to the virus, which currently stands at 11 in Powys where cases have been confirmed. Office for National Statistics figures show that number may actually be over 50.

Dr Giri Shankar, Incident Director for the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak response at Public Health Wales, said: “Social distancing rules remain in effect. Public Health Wales fully supports the small adjustments made to the regulations which includes allowing people to exercise more than once a day. However, people should stay local. This means any exercise should start and end at home and not involve going a significant distance from home.

“We seem to have passed the peak and flattened the curve of new cases of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Wales, which appears to be an indication of the effectiveness of lockdown measures. We are currently working with Welsh Government to determine the best approach for when the lockdown is eventually eased."
