Natural Resources Wales is investigating the effect of an oil spill in a river in Llanfair Caereinion.

Officers visited the area on Wednesday, May 6, following reports from local people about the pollution, which was causing an oily sheen on top of the water and a strong odour.

Llanfair Caereinion residents described the smell as "awful", while another person said "it was so bad it gave me a headache".

NRW said the source of the pollution was an oil tank in the area.

David Lee, Environment Team Leader for Natural Resources Wales said: “We are aware of this incident which was reported by many sources, including a self-report by the affected householder.

"We attended the site on the morning of 6 May while adhering to Government guidance on the Coronavirus. There is a slight sheen of oil on the Banwy and we found no evidence of dead fish.

“The remaining oil in the tank has been removed and the householder has started to arrange repair work.

“We are investigating the effect of the spill on the immediate area.”
