The 47-year-old, as well as congratulating the team, singled out his sports scientist David Yates and physiotherapist Cian O’Doherty for their hard work in getting the players fit and ready for Friday’s game.

Speaking after the match at Highbury Stadium, Ainsworth said: “I can’t thank my sports science department enough because they told me, four weeks ago, we would be on the ascendancy coming into the first game.

“They said, we would be firing, and we will be right where we have to be in that first game, and I trusted them, I totally trusted them and I gave them total control of the fitness.

“Availability was important but that gave me time to focus on what we were going to do and how we were going to do it.

“I can trust the players.

“I’ve got four generals in there that did that huddle at the end so they bought the boys in.

“I don’t need to be in there because I can trust them on what they are saying.

“I know what the messages were because I could see that them running off like they wanted to go into battle.

“It was just awesome.

“But I’m not going to think that this has got us to the next round, not a chance, as we’ve got a big game on Monday.

“We’ve got a big thing at Wycombe Wanderers, I’ve been in charge for quite a while now and the culture we’ve got is a trusting culture.”
