Cockermouth's Kirkgate Arts Centre has announced it will not open before September.

They said in an email message sent out to supporters: "Although lockdown restrictions are easing, live performances remain forbidden, and it's not feasible for us to open the Kirkgate Centre safely for public events before September."

They have received a grant from Arts Council England emergency response fund to help with entertainment while the venue is closed.

The organisation said it is: "delighted to have received the grant. This enables us to offer some activity to keep people entertained and engaged while their venues continue to be closed."

The first of these activities has been to create an online version of the Wordsworth 250 exhibition, which the heritage group had prepared before lockdown.

They also have a virtual Cockermouth Live Festival with performers such as Ian McMillan, Luke Carver Goss and Kathryn Tickell, which would have been their headline acts, available to see on Cockermouth Live YouTube until July 11.

They added: "The community venues served by Arts Out West will be making their own decisions about what they can safely offer and when."
