A new pub has officially opened its doors in Marlow.

The Duke of Clarence, which replaces the outgoing Baroosh on the town’s High Street, opened to the public on Tuesday, July 7, 104 days after their original opening date.

The latest pub in the town was due to open on Wednesday, March 25, but after the government put the whole country in lockdown on Monday, March 23, this date was rescheduled.

McMullens and Sons, which owns the Duke of Clarence, said: “The Duke of Clarence - Marlow is now officially open!

“What a whirlwind this pub has had, the original opening date was set for the day the pubs closed.

“But we are so pleased to announce the official opening of the Duke.

"We are bringing good-humored, traditional fun with a twist to Marlow.

“Expect a relaxed atmosphere bursting with character, contemporary yet traditional cocktails, craft beer, small batch production gins, gourmet burgers, bespoke seasonal dishes, brunch, entertainment, and even a shuffleboard perfect for some competitive socialising.”

Following a planning application that was submitted to Wycombe District Council at the back end of 2019, it was revealed in January of this year that Baroosh was due to be rebranded, whilst having a huge renovation.

The new-look pub now boasts a completely different interior that has a niche and unique seating area and planters at the entrance.

The Duke of Clarence is also a dog-friendly pub.

A spokesperson from the pub also explained the choice of name for Marlow’s latest eatery.

They said: “The name reflects George Plantagenet, 1st Duke of Clarence, who forfeited his title in 1478, after he had been convicted of treason against his brother.

“He allegedly met his end by being drowned in a butt of Malmsey (according to William Shakespeare) and his son, Prince Edward was later executed and his head buried at nearby Bisham Abbey.”

Despite only being open for a few days, the Duke of Clarence seems to have had a positive impact with some residents, with Victoria Page saying on Facebook: “We popped in and the service from our waitress was first class.”

Food is served from 12 noon to 8pm but due to the ongoing pandemic, there is limited seating.
