THROUGHOUT lockdown the people of Denbigh have looked outwards to support some of their most vulnerable neighbours.

Led by Glyndwr Criminology and Criminal Justice student Corrina Edwards, her mother Helen Smart and friend Matty Evans, the town has supported homeless people in Wrexham with hot drinks, baking and more.

After weeks of gathering donations, the trio went a step further on Tuesday, July 7 the trio treated 35 people in need to Pizza Hut at a gathering in Queen’s Square.

Corrina, Helen and Matty have been visiting Wrexham to support the homeless and rough sleepers throughout lockdown

Miss Edwards, who is a youth worker for Denbighshire for Denbighshire County Council and teaching assistant, said: “Myself, my mum and our friend Matty have been going out to Wrexham every Tuesday over the majority of Covid, we set up a table with hot drinks, food, snacks and toiletries, as well as providing clothing also.

“On pizza night, we with hot chocolates, snack bags, clothing, toiletries and cakes and I walked to Pizza Hut and got lots of large pizzas and they all helped themselves. It was a huge success - they were so so grateful.”

The trio, who are not affiliated with any charity, elected to make the journey weekly “off their own backs” and have been working with the permission of North Wales Police and with support from a PCSO.

They have also provided their own masks, visors, hand sanitisers and have practiced social distancing throughout.

Corrina added: “We greet the homeless with a smile, a non-judgemental chat and the things they need.

“We’re all only one missed bill away from potentially falling into that life and it’s important to remember that

“As the weeks go on we are seeing more and more each week who are so grateful. As well as the homeless we see lots of people struggling being on their own, socially and financially - a chat, a hot drink and some food is beneficial for them too.

“We have also dropped off extra snack bags in Glyndwr to be handed out where currently they are providing many homeless with a room to stay over this period which is great. We go out around 4/5 o’clock to ensure the homeless are able to get back to Glyndwr for the 6 o’clock curfew.

“Without the amazing support from Denbigh - from cooking meals for us, baking cakes and dropping off donations - and surrounding areas like Bagillt, where Matty is from, this would not be possible.”

“We have had no end of thank you’s and this week to see the happy faces after pizza and cakes makes it worth while.”
