WREXHAM Council has successfully applied for an interim injunction in a bid to protect greenbelt land and woodland areas.

The land, off Bowers Road in Acrefair, is being cleared without planning permission - and local residents have launched a campaign to save it.

Last month, the Leader reported that around three acres of woodland had been cleared allegedly illegally, and Wrexham Council says its officers have been "increasingly concerned about the destruction" and works going on at this site and took the unusual steps of applying to the High Court for an interim injunction.

The Leader:

Interim injunctions are court orders used to prevent a party from doing a particular act, which will in some way damage/injure the other party or their property.

The remedy could be available where an alleged wrongdoing is to be carried out in the future and there is not enough time for the dispute to be brought to court and resolved before the damage is done.

Cllr David Kelly, Lead Member for Planning and Corporate Services said: “Applying to the courts for such an order is very unusual for us and one we didn’t undertake lightly but, as a final resort. After several notices to cease work and restore the area were ignored we felt we were left with no alternatives.

“I would like to thank the council officers concerned with this case for their commitment to the environment and to responding to the concerns of residents. We now hope the injunction will serve its purpose and that works to this site is stopped and efforts made to rectify the damage caused.”
