PARKING has been axed at a popular car park after a weekend of chaos.

Last weekend, more than 500 vehicles parked illegally and irresponsibly on one of the main routes in Snowdonia.

Gwynedd Council say 180 fines were issued.

Now, parking has been suspended at Pen-y-Pass on weekends.

This means that, unless they can be dropped off and picked up or they arrive by taxi, cycle, visitors to Pen-y-Pass must use the Sherpa bus service. Alternatively, they can follow the public footpath from Pen y Gwryd to Pen-y-Pass.

The Snowdonia National Park tweeted: "From Friday the 24th of July at 5:00pm onward, there will be no parking available at Pen-y-Pass on weekends.

"Users who wish to walk up Snowdon from Pen-y-Pass will be encouraged to park in Nant Peris or Llanberis, and take advantage of the Park and Ride Sherpa service which will be running every 15 minutes between 6:45am and 6:40pm every day."

Motorists have already been warned they risk having their vehicle towed away if they park illegally.
