A DENBIGH-based charity is estimated to have provided food and support to more than 1000 people throughout Denbighshire during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Denbigh Youth Project has been supporting families and young people throughout the county, as part of Denbighshire County Council's 'Families First' programme, funded by the Welsh Government.

Councillor Mark Young, who represents the Denbigh Lower constituency, is chair of the charity and has thanked all supporters and partners, who he says have been 'crucial' to helping families and individuals receive food and support throughout the pandemic.

He estimates that the project has helped more than 1000 people since the Coronavirus outbreak began.

Cllr Young added: "Without such funding, we couldn’t have achieved all the help that’s been delivered throughout the county.

"We must acknowledge that Russel Davies, our manager, and his team have all worked through this very difficult time with such dedication and professionalism.

"I really appreciate the efforts of all involved. The fact that they are doing so much good for more than a thousand residents, on top of their normal jobs, is amazing."

As part of the programme, Denbigh Youth Project, located at Yr Hwb on Smithfield Road, identified the following families as a priority: Families that are likely to struggle to cope with meeting their basic needs during self-isolation and families who are likely to experience significant challenges to meeting basic needs in the event of prolonged school closures, e.g. for three to four months.

Denbigh Youth Project has successfully gained additional funding from the Welsh Council for Community Action - Voluntary Services Emergency Fund and the Community and Voluntary Support Conwy – CLOCAENOG - Covid 19 fund. The funding, together with the Fareshare (surplus foods from supermarkets) has enabled the project to supply fresh food and essential items delivered to people's doors.

Cllr Young added: "While delivering, it’s been a good opportunity to check on individuals we’re supporting. From April to July, Denbigh Youth Project delivered food to more than 1000 individuals."
