TWO men were arrested in a 100mph police chase following a burglary on Bangor University campus on Monday night.

North Wales Police said the men, from the Manchester area, remain in custody after failing to stop on the A55 before one of them attempted to flee on foot when their car tyres were stung by officers.

The police said it was called at about 10.30pm on Monday, September 21 to report that lead had been stolen from the Ffriddoedd Road area and the suspects left the scene in a car.

The police traced the vehicle, a Vauxhall Zafira, to the A55 using information given by university security staff.

It stationed a police car in St Asaph where it attempted to stop the suspects, aged 36 and 58, however they failed to do so and instead continued at speeds above 100wpm.

The pursuit continued to Buckley where it came to a stop after the vehicle’s tyres were punctured by police stingers.

"Two men are currently in police custody following a report that lead had been stolen from Bangor University last night,” a police statement said.

"At 10:30pm police received a report from security at the University site on Ffriddoedd Road that lead had been stolen and suspects had made off in a vehicle.

“Details of the vehicle were given and staff from the North Wales Police Control Room got to work to trace the car. Despite the partial registration they traced a Vauxhall Zafira heading out of Bangor on the eastbound carriageway of the A55 and officers from the Roads Policing Unit were dispatched.

“The car was still being traced and officers, who were waiting in St Asaph, signalled for the vehicle to stop, but it failed to do so exceeding speeds of 100mph, and a pursuit was authorised.

“Officers from the Eastern Roads Policing Unit and the Intercept Team were also dispatched and utilised a stinger device near Northop. The Zafira then slowed down and came off the A55 at Buckley.

“The vehicle came to a stop and the driver was arrested. Despite the passenger making off on foot, he was found hiding in a nearby garden.

“A quantity of lead was also recovered from the vehicle.

“Both men were arrested and taken to police custody where they currently remain.”
