MELIDEN FC have confirmed their new club captain for the upcoming season.

The Miners will be taking their place in the new NWCFA Tier 4 (East) Premier Division as part of the Football Association of Wales’ restructure coming into effect once the campaign is permitted to start due to the coronavirus pandemic, and Ashley New has been chosen by manager Gareth Jones to lead the squad going forward.

New returned to the set-up this summer and boasts a wealth of experience across the region, and he is sure to bring a tremendous amount to the role.

This is the latest in a series of positive announcements from the club in recent weeks, who could emerge as one of the league’s surprise packages when the FAW gets the green light from the Welsh Government to get the season underway after moving to phase three of their return to football proposal last week.

The club might be one of the less fancied sides in Tier 4 next season, but with the likes of Dan Porter and former Stoke City youth player Liam Smith in their ranks, it could see the Miners attain some notable scalps during the campaign.

Meliden will be taking on close rivals such as Prestatyn Sports, The North Football Association and Rhuddlan Town, with the club also set to clash with title favourites CPD Y Rhyl 1879 during their inaugural season.
