WHOLE communities in Wales could be tested for coronavirus as part of mass testing scheme.

First Minister Mark Drakeford said Welsh Government is keeping an eye on the trial that is currently taking place over in Liverpool.

Testing facilities were opened last week in Liverpool with thousands of army personnel being brought in to deliver the mass testing scheme.

It used lateral flow tests to deliver results within half an hour for people who are not showing symptoms.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson previously said that rapid testing that is being piloted could be a real way forwards through the pandemic.

At the press conference on Monday, November 9, First Minister Mark Drakeford said the idea of mass testing is ‘attractive’.

He added: “Our officials are involved in the Liverpool pilot. We are part of the network that will learn from the way in which the experiment is being conducted, the things that are working and the things that are more challenging than expected.

“The idea of whole town testing is of course attractive to us and we will look to see whether we learn from experiments elsewhere, there are ways in which we could deploy similar sorts of approaches here in Wales.

“I don’t have a date by which that would be possible. There is still a lot of learning to be gathered from the early days of the Liverpool experiment, but we are plugged into that and we will look to see if there are ways in which we can learn from that experiment and put it to work in Wales.”
