A RUTHIN actress has raised more than £1,000 for freelancers in the same sector by walking up Moel Famau every day throughout November.

Upon completing the challenge, Karen Campbell has walked a total distance of more than 100 miles, raising around £1,410.

Creative freelancers have been hit hard by the impact of Covid-19, when venues were forced to shut their doors in March, most of the work dried up.

The ‘Helping Hand Appeal’ has given small bursaries of £560 to freelancers, giving some hope and support during this period - but Karen wanted to do something herself too and with her sum of money has raised enough to cover two micro-bursaries for freelancers so far.

Denbighshire Free Press:

Upon completing her challenge on Monday, Karen (above), who has been performing at Theatr Clwyd since 1979, said: “My legs are killing me but it's been fantastic. I've had lots of people from the theatre, the town and more join me throughout the month.

“On the last day (Monday), people were sat in their cars tooting their horns at us as we finished up. It was actually quite emotional."

Like many other actors and actresses, Karen had a full schedule of events planned for 2020 - including a role in the Shakespeare tragedy Macbeth in Singapore - but they have all been cancelled.

This will be the first time since she began her career that she will not be ‘treading the boards’ over the festive season.

Alongside being an actress, Karen is also a Martial Arts instructor and was inducted into the Martial Arts UK Hall of Fame just last year.
