PLANS for a new community sports hub in Chester have been unanimously approved by councillors.

The proposal by Chester FC Community Trust and Cheshire West and Chester Council, who are working in collaboration on the project, was given the green light yesterday (December 1).

Members of the planning committee met virtually to rule on the application, which had been recommended for approval.

The scheme will see a new full-size floodlit 3G pitch and sports pavilion created off Blacon Avenue, together with improved access, car parking and ancillary works.

The pavilion will have two main changing rooms and a large training room, together with a car park providing a total of 104 spaces for cars and two spaces for coaches.

The development forms a key part of the wider vision for King George V Sports Hub, which also includes the improvement of the grass pitches and existing pavilion at the adjacent King George V playing fields.

Jim Green, CEO of the Community Trust, said: “We are delighted the project has secured planning consent and very grateful to the council’s planning committee and its officers for recognising the huge benefits the sports hub will have for the community.

“In what have been extremely challenging circumstances, it is testament to the partners involved that the scheme has continued to progress and we are a step closer to making this amazing facility a reality.

“We would like to thank everyone who supported the application and there will be further announcements in the coming weeks about how individuals and businesses can play their part in helping to bring what will be one of the best community sport venues in the region to our city.”
