THE Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of a Denbighshire school has set pupils a challenge to help raise funds for a new outside play area.

The PTA of Rhos Street School, Ruthin, is aiming to raise £500 to help set up a 'suitable' play area.

The new site for Pen Barras and Rhos Street pupils first opened its doors in 2018. Since then, children who attend have been without a play area.

But now, a challenge has been set for children to complete a 50 mile, either by walking, scooting or biking, in the space of 28 days.

It is hoped that this will help them raise the funds needed to set up a new outside area at the school and give the children somewhere suitable to play during break time.

A spokesperson for the PTA said: "This year we can’t hold our usual fundraising events in school, but we are encouraging the children to get away from screens and out into the fresh air.

"The children have been set a challenge of walking, biking or scooting 50 miles in 28 days. Money raised in sponsorship from their challenge will go towards improving the outdoor play areas."

The new joint-site for Ysgol Pen Barras and Rhos Street school children opened in April 2018, as part of the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme.

Under the first phase of that, a £90million investment also saw a new school built for Rhyl High School and Ysgol Tir Morfa, as well as a new faith school in Rhyl, Christ the Word Catholic School.

New schools were also introduced at Ysgol Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd and Ysgol Carreg Emlyn in Clocaenog.

The Rhos Street PTA's fundraiser has so far gathered £380 of their £500 target.
