POLICE have issued a public plea to follow the law as more people have been fined for travelling to beauty spot sin the county for exercise.

On Saturday, a spokesman for the North Flintshire team said: “We are getting numerous reports of people travelling from outside the area on none-essential journeys breaching COVID regulations.

“We have been left with no choice but to report in excess of ten different households for these breaches. Wepre Park and Talacre Beach in particular have been bad today.

“Please help us, we don't want to issue any fines for this and the country is moving in the right direction towards the easing of restrictions but we aren't there yet.

“Ambulances are queued up outside YGC [Ysbyty Glan Clwyd] with patients, they are busy enough! Essential journey only or journeys within the regulations please!

“We will continue to check.”

Under current Welsh Government guidance for alert level four, any form of exercise must start and finish from your home address.

A Welsh Government spokesman said: “Exercise should be undertaken locally – from home or as close as possible to the home.

“In general, this must not involve people driving to a location away from home for this purpose. No journeys of any significant distance should be taken, for example, just in order to exercise in the countryside or at beauty spots.”

They stressed that “this is the law and not just guidance”. Police can fine people who knowingly travel beyond their local area to beauty spots.

The limited exception to the law is for those who are disabled or people with a physical or mental illness or impairment.

In this case, there may be a reasonable exception for travelling.

The Welsh Government spokesman said: “For example, some wheelchair users may not be able to start to exercise immediately outside their homes for practical access reasons, and may need to drive to a suitable flat location, such as a park, for this purpose.

“In these circumstances the journey should be to the nearest convenient accessible location and no long journeys should be undertaken unless absolutely necessary.”
