MOTORISTS have been urged to take precautions following reports of catalytic converter thefts.

Officers from the Eastern Community Safety policing team warned on Wednesday that the thefts had taken place in the Wrexham area, with 4x4 type vehicles being targeted.

Wrexham Rural Inspector Gavin Gilmore said: "We have had catalytic converter thefts from motor vehicles.

"They seem to be targeting Toyota and Honda vehicles.

"Our warning to people with these types of vehicles is to be vigilant, set your alarms and check for disturbances. "We've recorded four or five of these in Wrexham and surrounding forces have had more.

"There is no trend as to when they're happening - they seem to be at all hours of the day.

"Our community safety team is releasing leaflets and information to the owners of these vehicles to remind them to be vigilant around their properties."

Insp Gilmore added owners can also deter offenders by parking in a way which makes theft more difficult, for example with the exhaust nearest to a wall or fence.
