NEWS PRESENTER Huw Edwards was among many people to pay tribute to 'one of the best Welsh preachers of modern times' who died recently.

Reverend WI Cynwil Williams passed away at the Dolanog care home in Rhyl on May 1, aged 84.

Before becoming minister of Capel y Crwys, Cardiff, Revd. Williams was minister of Capel Mawr in Denbigh for many years.

During his time there he served as minister to Dr Kate Roberts, and later wrote extensively about her and her work.

Revd. Williams was also a highly-respected author and wrote the biography of the former Archbishop of Wales, the Rev. Dr Rowan Williams.

Paying tribute to him, news presenter Huw Edwards said: "We offer sincere condolences to the family of the Revd W I Cynwil Williams, one of the best Welsh preachers of modern times, author, patriot, and faithful friend to so many people. Coffa da amdano."

Meirion Morris, General Secretary of the Presbyterian Church of Wales said: "Our sympathy goes out to the family of the late Rev. Cynwil sincerest Williams after hearing of his death late last week. He was a beloved husband and father, and a friend to many.

"As a careful minister and shepherd, he earned his place in the hearts of the people entrusted to him. As a preacher, he demonstrated his academic talent and ability and his interest in reading.

"He was also an author, and his biographical volume about Rowan Williams stood out. As a historian, his interest in our roots was dear, and he was especially careful and loyal in his dealings with Coleg Trefeca. lost one who fully filled the chair of our Association and Assembly as President.

A private funeral service will be held at 2pm tomorrow (Wednesday, May 12). Donations are being accepted for the Dolanog care home in Rhyl and also to Marie Curie Nurses (North Wales).
