A VAN driver has sustained 'serious' injuries after colliding with a HGV on the A550 Welsh Road.

The road was closed in both directions due to the collision - which occurred between A540 Parkgate Road (Two Mills Traffic Lights, Two Mills) and A494 (Shotwick / Birkenhead Turn Off, Shotwick) at roughly 9.45am on Wednesday.

Cheshire Police said the collision between the van and HGV caused the van to be knocked off the road into a ravine, with its driver sustaining serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said its crews attended the scene and freed the van driver who was trapped inside.

North West Ambulance Service said it attended the incident with an ambulance, rapid response vehicle and an advanced paramedic, and that a male patient was taken to hospital.

The collision has now been cleared and the road has reopened.

Cheshire Police is appealing to witnesses of the collision, and anyone with dashcam footage, to contact the force on 101 quoting reference number 985939.
