ROCK and roll couple Jules and Mike Peters trekked the Offa’s Dyke Path with fans from as far as San Francisco and Japan to raise nearly £20,000 for cancer services.

The Alarm duo lead an international trek every year for their Love Hope Strength (LHS) Foundation and were due to visit the Sahara Desert this summer, however due to travel restrictions they decided there would be no better time to see Wales’ natural beauty.

“I can’t tell you how amazing but how tough it has been. When we left it felt like winter and now we’re arriving summer is finally here,” said Mrs Peters.

“My soles are aching but my soul feels good! It feels like it’s been a lifetime but it’s also flown.

“Offa’s Dyke Rocks has always been about raising money, raising awareness, and raising hope, and thanks to the support of hundreds of people I think we’ve collectively achieved that.”

Some of the band’s cult-like fanbase took part in the walk along the 177-mile route from Prestatyn to Sedbury at their own pace, while others covered the distance virtually, on routes around their home from May 23 to June 6. They have collectively walked 1.5 million steps, roughly equivalent to 700 miles, and raised a total of £19,469.

The couple set up the LHS Foundation in 2007, two years after Mr Peters was diagnosed with leukaemia.

LHS funds equipment and projects at cancer centres across the UK and the USA and has pledged to give $30,000 to the children’s cancer unit at the Muhimbili National Hospital in Tanzania. About 70 per cent of cancer deaths occur in low income countries which cannot acquire radiotherapy equipment.

Mrs Peters was also diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016 and found walking to and from Glan Clwyd Hospital benefitted her treatment.

“Keeping active can help you lose weight and keeping a healthy weight reduces the risk of 13 different types of cancer,” added Mrs Peters.

“When dealing with my own diagnosis, I was buoyed to see others who had gone on to complete tough adventures following their recovery, and I found it helpful to set myself goals to achieve when I was feeling healthy again.

“Hiking Offa’s Dyke was one of the things I wanted to accomplish. If me completing this helps to give one person more confidence, hope and peace when they are facing their own cancer diagnosis or other chronic illness, then I feel all these steps have been worthwhile.”
