DENBIGH Tennis Club members have raised more than £2,000 for charity by completing a 12-hour tennis marathon in the sweltering heat over the weekend.
The event, which joined up with other tennis-a-thon’s across the UK, was in aid of Dementia UK and raised a total of £2,036 (correct at time of writing) through its fundraising page.
On what was the hottest day of the year so far, six players; Steffan Jones, Wayne Cooper, James Gurney, Andrew Thompson, Frauke Romer and Cathryn Lloyd-Jones competed from 8 in the morning until 8 in the evening on the club’s recently-upgraded courts on Saturday.
As well as the tennis marathon, other activities took place on the day including friendlies against Ruthin and Prestatyn tennis club members.
The club also held a raffle and cake sale, raising an additional £460 on the day and the rest, £2,036, has been collected through the JustGiving page.
The event was supported by the Mayor of Denbigh Cllr Rhys Thomas and Dr James Davies MP for Vale of Clwyd, both of whom were in attendance and took to the court with a racket.
Dr Davies said: ““I was very pleased to attend this fantastic fundraising event for such a worthwhile cause and to knock a few balls over the net!
“Dementia has now overtaken Covid and re-established itself as the leading cause of death in England and Wales. Having personal family experience of dementia and as a former clinical champion for dementia, I know only too well how important it is that we find a cure.
“All fundraising efforts are therefore greatly needed and I commend Denbigh Tennis Club for taking on this challenge. The weather was extremely warm on Saturday and it can’t have been easy playing tennis for 12 hours in such heat, but they achieved their goal and I know that the more than £2,000 they raised for Dementia UK will be greatly appreciated by the charity.”
Steffan Jones, Denbigh Tennis Club secretary who was one of the players to complete the 12-hour marathon, added: “We have raised way above our original fundraising target of £500 and the club is proud of its achievements over the weekend, showing that anything can be achieved with the determination of its members and local residents.”
