RESIDENTS of a Denbighshire village opened up their colourful gardens to visitors over the weekend to help raise money for charity.

People living in Llandrillo, near Corwen, took part in the village's first-ever 'Open Garden' day on Saturday (July 24).

Organisers of the event say it proved to be popular and helped collect more than £150 for the Wales Air Ambulance which relies on donations to keep its services running annually.

It is now hoped that the open garden day can become a yearly occurrence in Llandrillo following the success of the first.

One of the organisers, Wendy Phillips said: "On Saturday, Llandrillo residents opened their gardens up to the public for the first annual garden open day.with donations going to Wales Air Ambulance.

"As we all know, the last 18 months have been hard for all of us.with many of us taking this time to spend in our gardens. This has resulted in some beautiful displays on show in Llandrillo.

"The idea to open our gardens came from us posting photos to our local facebook page. We had such great feedback from it.

"It was then loosely mentioned we should do an open garden day. But, with some of us being first year gardeners, we where a bit nervous but decided to just go for it.and it went from there.

"Three weeks later we had a few people willing to open up their gardens and greet the public and invite them to wander round.

"It was a lovely day, all the gardeners really enjoyed the experience. It was lovely to see people there and chat to them about our gardens and all the different plants on show for them.

"For our first unpublicised outing we had a great response and managed to raise over £150 for the air ambulance which was great. Hopefully next year we will have a few more village gardeners willing to open up as well and make it an even bigger event.

"We would like to say a big thank you to the gardener who opened up their gardens for us; Diane and Roger at Wenallt, Pamela and Wendy at Bro Dinam, Gerty at The Bell, Sandra and Ken at Llys Y Groes and Christine and David at Gwalia."
