A SOCIAL WORKER from Denbighshire has embarked on a triple-header of challenges to raise awareness of a condition which has 'created a lot of pain' in parts of her life.

Endometriosis, which can affect women of any age, is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb starts to grow in other places, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes.

Sophie Toogood from Ruthin lives with the condition and says the 'physical and emotional impact' of it has 'created a lot of pain in parts of my life'.

However, Sophie is determined to raise awareness of the condition and is currently in the middle of a triple-header fundraising drive to raise money for Endometriosis UK.

Alongside her friend Geraint May, who is fundraising separately for Prostate Cancer UK, and mum Gill and Geraint's partner Emma Craig, she recently completed the National 3 Peaks (Ben Nevis, Scafell and Snowdon) in a time of 22hrs and 38mins.

Sophie and Gill still have two more challenges to go this year to collect even more money - a skydive jump this coming Friday (July 30) and the York Marathon in October.

They have so far collected a mammoth £3,379 (correct at time of writing) for Endometriosis UK.

Sophie, a social worker for Denbighshire County Council, said: "My mum and I are partaking in three challenges which are totally stretching us physically and mentally. We completed each summit in the national three peaks challenge in the thickest fog, and wettest rain.

"The sheer generosity from people donating to our pages has been overwhelming so far, and also, the local businesses supporting us have made all this possible.

"As an endometriosis sufferer, diagnosed in 2019 via laparoscopy I have been on a physical and emotional rollercoaster journey pre and post diagnosis. That has highlighted to me the importance of raising awareness of the condition to help other women feel comfortable in discussing their health.

"I found the time prior to diagnosis extremely frightening and isolating, so I am making it my mission to spread the word more and more."
