DENBIGH TOWN advanced to the Second Round of the JD Welsh Cup with a battling 4-2 win over a spirited Llanuwchllyn side.

The two sides, who are both playing in tier three this season, produced a match to remember in the first round proper of the prestigious cup.

Denbigh started the game on the front foot with Lee Davey shooting just wide from 30 yards after 8 minutes. A minute later full back Billy Holmes sent in a long throw to Stuart Jones who turned neatly and shot but Dascalu in Llanuwchllyn’s goal was down quickly to save the shot.

Denbigh’s pressure on the Llanuwchllyn goal paid off in the 15th minute with a superbly taken goal from Sam Jones who produced a screamer of a shot from 25 yards out.

The home side had an excellent spell during the middle of the first half.

From a corner, Llanwuchllyn’s Joe Evans flew at the ball with intent and succeeded in reaching the ball before a Denbigh defender and his header from six yards hit the back of the net.

Llanuwchllyn continued to press the Denbigh goal and it was with a sense of relief that the half time whistle came, allowing Denbigh to regroup.

Within a minute of the restart, Kristian Pierce took a free kick and floated the ball in which was cleared by the defence only for the ball to fall to Stuart Jones who shot the ball into the top corner for 2-1.

Denbigh’s third goal came after 54 minutes - Lee Davey won the ball in midfield and played the ball across to right back Sion Jones who sent in a fierce cross which saw Llanuwchllyn’s unfortunate defender Paul Jones slice the ball into his own goal.

On 73 minutes Denbigh had their fourth goal. This time Pierce and Stuart Jones linked up outside the Llanuwchllyn penalty area and they fed in Paul Fleming. The midfield dynamo took the ball in his stride and unleashed a left foot bullet of a shot from 18 yards which gave Dascalu no chance.

Denbigh now looked to play out the game but from a rare second half Llanuwchllyn attack, Town conceded a corner. From the corner as the ball floated into the area and Denbigh cleared, referee Mr Dukes blew for an infringement. He had seen a push on a Llanuwchllyn forward and he pointed to the penalty spot which Joe Williams fired past keeper Joe Griffiths’ outstretched right hand to give Llanuwchllyn a glimmer of hope.

Denbigh regathered themselves though and continued to press on the home team’s goal in the remaining minutes.

In the last minute of time Jake Walker worked hard up front and persisted in battling for a ball whilst alone upfront. He won it, dribbled past a couple of defenders before shooting just wide of the target.
