A SUPERB strike from Kristian Pierce and a powerful header from Lee Davey gave Denbigh Town the three points in a tense game against a talented Llanrwst side.

The home team were buoyant after their 2-0 win over highly ranked Porthmadog earlier in the week - but Denbigh walked away with the win from this one.

This was only Denbigh’s second league game in the Ardal North West League after being involved in cup matches and they were keen to make up for their loss on penalties last week at Penrhyndeudraeth.

The first half saw plenty of endeavour from Denbigh who had the majority of the possession, but were unable to find the end product.

With twenty minutes played almost all in the Llanwrst half, their only shot was an effort from Jacob Barratt which was comfortably saved by ex-Denbigh goalkeeper Gwydion Owen.

As the game progressed Billy Holmes, who had married fiancee Lucy just 24 hours earlier, was fouled just outside Llanwrst’s penalty box and Barratt took the kick which was cleared to Kristian Pierce whose volley went just over the bar from outside the penalty area.

The second half saw the game burst into life on 50 minutes when Stuart Jones brought down Callum Parry inside the penalty area. Ex- Denbigh striker Samuel Jones stepped up to fire home and give the hosts the lead.

Just a minute later it was all square - Holmes went on a jinxing run from his own half before laying the ball off towards Will Ashley who then place it into the path of Kristian Pierce who let rip a screamer of a shot which flew in.

Soon after, Pierce had another long range shot at Owen but this time the keeper saved comfortably. Llanrwst had their moments with Callum Parry and Samuel Jones both threatening Town’s goal , but solid defending by Stuart Jones and Moses Barnett thwarted any danger.

With 75 minutes played full back Matty Morris sent in in great first touch cross from the right wing to the centre of the penalty box which was met cleanly by Lee Davey who had cleverly lost his marker and was able to send a powerful header across goal for 2-1.

Town now looked to hold onto their lead as the hosts pressed forward in search of the equaliser. Sam Tate replaced a limping Billy Holmes on 83 minutes with Denbigh’s defence seeing Will Ashley dropping to centre back and Moses Barnett moving to left back.

The Llanrwst pressure was full on and on 89 minutes Joe Griffiths made a match saving stunning save diving low to his left-hand side.

As the game entered its 5th minutes of injury time Moses Barnett made a superb tackle to thwart yet another Llanrwst goal scoring opportunity from within his penalty box and secure Denbigh a massive victory..
