RUTHIN Town advanced to the third round of the FAW Welsh Cup, but there was no such luck for neighbours Denbigh Town.

The former survived a scare on Anglesey, whilst the latter bowed out at home to higher leaguer opposition.

Ruthin progressed with a 5-4 victory over a spirited Bodedern Athletic side, having been 5-0 up in the tie at one stage on Saturday afternoon.

A great first half from Ruthin saw goals from Josh Jones, Matty Hill and Jamie Cumming put them 3-0 up at the break.

By the hour mark, Jones and Hill had scored again to put the visitors five goals up. But, Boded, who play two leagues below Ruthin, fought back bravely and nearly took the tie to penalties.

Asa Thomas' spot-kick set Ricky Williams' side on their way with goals from Eric Leach (70'), Thomas again (85') and Jordan Taylor (90') really getting pulses racing for both sides.

Ruthin, who play their football in tier two JD Cymru North, hung on for victory in the end and put their name into the hat for the third round of the prestigious competition.

Tier three club Denbigh Town crashed out to top-flight opponents Caernarfon Town with a 4-0 defeat on Friday evening.

Despite the result though, it was a night to remember for Denbigh who got the chance to showcase the £200,000 makeover of their Central Park home ground to a live audience on S4C.

The renovation of the pitch is the latest in a series of major improvements which has already seen the club build a 475-seat main stand and a new clubhouse and install floodlights and secure perimeter fencing.

A crowd of around 600 people attended the match on Friday night as Denbigh put in a decent performance against a club two leagues above them.

Goals from Cai Jones, Iwan Cartwright and Rob Hughes put the Cofis 3-0 up at the break before another Hughes goal late on sealed a 4-0 win.

Denbigh had their chances though with the likes of Kristian Pierce, Lee Davey and Mark Roberts all going close to finding a breakthrough.

It was a performance which Denbigh Town can be very proud of despite the result and it was a night to remember for a club which has worked so hard behind the scenes over the past few years to improve facilities to a very high standard.
