SINCE becoming Mayor of Ruthin in May, it has been a surprisingly busy time for Councillor Heather Williams and Ruthin Town Council.

This is in spite of the normal type of events, such as the Ruthin Festival and Ruthin Show, having been cancelled due to uncertainty regarding Covid 19 restrictions.

Since being appointed Mayor, Cllr Williams has taken part in judging the floral displays outside Ruthin businesses and licensed premises, as well as Ruthin Forward’s scarecrow competition.

She also recently welcomed some of the winners of a school art competition to the Old Courthouse to look at the Ruthin Town Clock Restoration Project exhibition.

One of the first things the Mayor was involved with was the recruitment of a new clerk for the town council and she was very pleased to appoint Siân Clark to the post.

The Old Courthouse/Yr Hen Lys on St Peter’s Square is now the base for the Ruthin Town Council office with both Siân Clark and the deputy town clerk/Old Courthouse Manager, Kate Harcus, working in the building.

The town clerk is available between 10am and 3pm each day, although there will be occasions when she is not available.

Cllr Williams said: “At present we are trying to open The Old Courthouse during the weekends between 10am to 4pm so that residents and visitors to the town can see exhibitions and discover the fascinating history and use of the present building.”

In recent months, the Ruthin Festival and the Ruthin Town Clock Restoration Project exhibitions were manned by volunteers throughout the week.

Kate Harcus is seeking more volunteers so that the building can be open to the public on more days. Phone 01824 703797 or email kate.harcus@theoldcourthouse.wales.

The town council will be making and publishing arrangements for convening its future meetings in line with the recent legislation which allows for participants to be in multiple locations (essentially a hybrid approach).

Details for accessing each meeting will be made available in advance of the meeting’s date. The town council is also actively seeking to update and renew its website to ensure compliance with accessibility and information requirements, including the availability of reports.
