CAROL Vorderman has helped celebrate the 100th birthday of the last surviving Dambuster.

Sq Ldr George "Johnny" Johnson, who lives in Bristol, was a bomb-aimer on a Lancaster bomber during the Second World War operation.

He was just 21 when he took part in daring operation by 617 Squadron in 1943, which famously involved experimental bouncing bombs.

Carol was one of the celebrities to get the veteran knighted, which led to him being made an MBE in 2017.

Wishing him a happy birthday on her Instagram on Thursday, Carol described him as "a wonderful man and friend".

She said: I've known Johnny for quite a few years ago and given him a few parties and he's the best company.

"In 2017 John Nichol and I fronted a campaign to get Johnny knighted and delivered an eventually 300,000 strong petition to 10 Downing St. He ended up with an MBE which he accepted on behalf of those who he flew with. I still think he should be knighted.

"As Hon Group Captain and Ambassador for our Air Cadets, I want to say 'Happy Birthday, Sir'."

Carol will be collecting messages for Johnny left on her page. She will print them out so he can read them at his leisure.

British astronaut Tim Peake was one of those to leave a message, saying: "Happy Birthday Sir and thank you for your service.

Another message read: "Have a wonderful birthday Sir. You truly deserve the best of everything. As a daughter of late RAF parents...I salute you Sir. Take care of yourself and again, have a wonderful birthday."

Another said: "Very happy birthday 'Sir’ Johnny a remarkable achievement getting to 100 have a fabulous celebratory birthday weekend."

Born in Bedford, Carol's mum brought the family back to home town of Prestatyn.

She attended Blessed Edward Jones Catholic High School in Rhyl before studying engineering at Cambridge.

After leaving Countdown in 2008, the 60-year-old has remained a regular on our screens, appearing on Strictly, I'm a Celebrity, and Loose Women.
