A POPULAR Vale of Clwyd celebration is set to return for 2022.

The annual Ruthin Festival will be taking place this year between June 25 and July 3 with concerts, recitals and activities for people of all ages to enjoy. The first festival was held in 1994, then in 1996 and it took place annually until 2019, with no festivals in 2020 or 2021 due to the Covid pandemic.

The committee of volunteers that organises the festival is understandably looking ahead to the return of the festival this year.

"After an absence since 2019, we are really looking forward to the festival week and the Top of Town event this year," said festival committee chair Gwion Tomos.

"There is a full week of varied events and then the Top of Town event as the major event of the festival week, with the entertainment starting at 1pm, and finishing at 8pm, with the music then planned to continue in the town’s public houses."

The popular Top of Town event will take place on Saturday, July 2, and has artists such as Dafydd Iwan a’r Band, Llareggub Brass Band and Alys Williams among the line up.

Details of all the events during the festival will be available very soon.

The festival week ranges from the town’s carnival at Ruthin School and Shakespeare play at Nantclwyd y Dref on the first Saturday, to a community cycle ride on the last Sunday with all kinds of concerts, recitals, workshops and sessions in between.

The Top of Town event will have a children and youth area in the grounds of St Peter’s Church and the area between the town clock and the post office.

The festival bar will be serving people at the top of Market Street with every penny going towards future festivals.

Festival vice-chair Jim Bryan said: "The voluntary committee which organises the festival has worked particularly hard this year to ensure everything is in place and all the arrangements are in place.

"It is their dedication and hundreds of hours of volunteer time that makes the festival happen from year to year."

He added: "We are especially short of volunteers to help with the event this year and would encourage people willing to help to contact us through the email address gwylrhuthun–ruthinfestival@hotmail.co.uk

"All event organisers in the town at the moment are struggling with enough people to organise and staff these community events, and even an hour would be a massive help."

The festival organisers would like to remind people that for the Top of Town event entry is £5 per adult.

There is a glass ban in place on the square throughout the day and people are reminded to be sensible in the amount of alcohol they being to the square.
