DENBIGH Town Football Club chairman Shon Powell has hailed the volunteers who helped make an international tournament such a success.

The club's Central Park ground hosted a trio of recent internationals involving teams from Wales, Brazil and Spain.

Bumper crowds were in attendance for the UEFA Under-16s Development Tournament matches that were played at Denbigh.

"It was a great success," said Mr Powell.

"We had really good comments and applause from the FAW (Football Association of Wales) for running it so professionally."

Close to 1,000 spectators were out in force for the final match of the tournament last Thursday.

Joseph Hatch and Freddie Issaka were the scorers for Wales in a 2-2 draw versus Spain, with the home nation earning the extra point by winning the penalty shoot-out.

This was Wales' first win in the tournament, as they were edged out 2-1 by Brazil, before losing on penalties versus Turkey.

"Thank-you to the 35-40 volunteers we had," added Mr Powell.

"It was an amazing event for the town."

Denbigh could be in line to host similar future events, with the grass pitch proving to be popular.

"It's a full-sized pitch with irrigation and it's very, very flat and it suits the FAW," added Mr Powell.

"We were congratulated we went to grass and not 4G.

"Other countries want to play their matches on grass pitches.

"The key thing next is for us to try and develop the changing rooms."
