CELEBRATIONS were in the air at Ysgol Bodnant, Prestatyn as the school became the first in the county to be awarded Cymraeg Campus Gwobr Arian (Silver Award).

Mr Urdd interrupted his busy schedule in the build-up to the Urdd Eisteddfod in Denbighshire at the end of May to take part in the celebration, which also marked 100 years of the Urdd.

“This is the culmination of two years of hard work by staff and children at our school and we are immensely proud of achieving this award,” said headteacher Mrs Vernon.

Gareth Williams, county advisor for the Welsh language, presented the award during the special assembly which was held to mark the day.

Gareth said: “It’s a fantastic achievement for the school community in the face of all the challenges associated with COVID-19 and in light of the Urdd National Eisteddfod coming to Denbighshire.

“It should also be noted that Ysgol Bodnant is the first English medium school in Denbighshire to achieve the Silver Award; Da iawn pawb”.

The award was presented to the schools’ Criw Cymraeg whose role it is to help promote the language and encourage its use.

The school is one of only three schools throughout North Wales to achieve the award which recognises the use of Welsh in English medium primary schools.

The month of May is an exciting time for some of the children as they prepare to tread the boards at the Urdd Eisteddfod with their entry into the drama competition.
