IT'S been a case of despair to delight for an award-winning Denbighshire salon.

Ruthin-based Tommy’s Hair Company has been crowned winners of a national hairdressing award at glittering awards ceremony held in London.

The Salon Business Awards are an industry-wide occasion recognising the hard work, passion and commitment of those within the hairdressing industry and their businesses, which continue to allow the craft to thrive.

The Tommy’s team were crowned winners of design salon of the year category, having shown their incredible refurbishment and journey of their Ruthin salon, which was flooded in January 2021.

Tommy’s, along with many other neighbouring businesses were sadly left with a trail of destruction following flash flooding throughout the town centre, leaving the salon under a large amount of water.

Once assessed, salon founders Tommy and Esther Van der Veken took the decision to fully renovate the salon, taking the interior back to the bare brick and rebuilding what has been their pride and joy for 16 years.

Staff at the salon were left 'absolutely devastated' following the floods which occurred following Storm Christoph in the town in January 2021.

At least 15 properties were flooded and businesses on Clwyd Street were also struck down by the floods.

Among those was Tommy's Hair Company - who lost everything on the ground floor of their salon.

A staff member, who was at the salon in the process of clearing up after the floods, told the Free Press at the time: "Everything down stairs is lost and the padding on the walls have soaked the water right up to about two meters or so."

A statement posted to Tommy's Hair Company's Facebook page added: "We are absolutely devastated following last nights flash flooding and events in Ruthin.

"Sadly our salon has been affected as has many of our neighbours and fellow business premises. We will come back from this difficult time by uniting together and helping each other. Please stay safe and stick together."

The salon has gone under an extensive refurbishment and the team reopened the doors in June of last year.

Tommy and Esther said: “We are absolutely over the moon to be crowned winners of design salon of the year – it’s such an honour and we are so overwhelmed – we were shaking, we are so happy!

"This award is a real testament to the hard work put in by us and our team to bring our guests something completely unique and special, a salon truly fabulous.”
