OVER 4,000 fans attended Wrexham AFC's first game back at The Racecourse ahead of the new season.

The Reds ran out comfortable 4-0 winners over Robbie Savage's Macclesfield Town on Saturday.

Fans queued in the club shop for new shirts and other merchandise.

And staff in the shop said shirt sales have been at "unprecedented" levels.

"We've never seen anything like this," a staff member said.

"I've worked in retail for 25 years and I've never seen anything like the queues we had at 5.30am for the release of the new home kit.

"As soon as we've been hanging the shirts up, they're gone again. It's been incredible."

Outside the ground, The Leader spoke to excited fans ahead of what promises to be a huge season for The Reds.

One such fan is William Griffiths, who has been attending games at The Racecourse for the last 60 years.

"In all my years supporting Wrexham, I can't remember a time as exciting as this," he said.

"What Rob (McElhenney) and Ryan (Reynolds) have done for this club is amazing. I saw Wrexham play in the old Division 2, and let's hope we can get back to playing at that sort of level."

A touching moment saw 10-year-old Reds fan Madi, who went viral after being filmed starting chants at the FA Trophy Final at Wembley, was given the honour of reading out the teams on the PA system

It was an emotional return to The Racecourse for Robbie Savage - who grew up watching The Reds before a stellar footballing career saw him make hundreds of Premier League appearances for Leicester, Birmingham, Blackburn and Derby, as well as 39 Wales caps.

He now part owns Macclesfield Town, and is the club's director of football.

The former Ysgol Bryn Alun pupil, who started his footballing journey at Llay United, said: "I used to get the bus from Bradley, stand on The Kop watching Wrexham sides of old - great memories.

"I really hope Wrexham do it (get promotion) this season."
