A DENBIGHSHIRE initiative is appealing for volunteers to help out as the cost of living crisis continues to bite.

The Vale of Clwyd Foodbank, which will mark its 10th anniversary in the autumn, is supported by the Trussell Trust and it is run entirely by volunteers.

It has centres in Denbigh and Ruthin and Vale of Clwyd Foodbank chairman Mark Owen said: "The cost of living crisis is going to make things more challenging.

"We are already seeing people who we would not normally expect to see coming into the foodbank.

"We are seeing people describing a sense of embarrassment.

"They are professional people who have found themselves in a difficult place because of the cost of living aspect.

"The demographic of people we have seen has changed.

"There are still those people that are desperate and we are here to support them, but we're seeing a new client type.

"We are here to alleviate that embarrassment as much as we can.

"We're trying to make it feel as welcoming and friendly service as we can."

Mr Owen has made a plea for more volunteers, seeking individuals with administrative skills, computer skills and who can answer the phones.

"A lot of things we're asking, they could do from home," he added.

"What I'm trying to do is plan ahead if the cost of living crisis continues to deepen."

He has praised generous shoppers who have helped to bolster the stocks of the foodbank.

"A big part of that will be the generosity of the people in the Vale of Clwyd. We collect provisions from Tesco, in Ruthin, and Morrisons, in Denbigh. We have seen massive generosity in those communities in recent months.

"Thank you to the public in the Ruthin and Denbigh area and encourage them to continue with that generosity.

"I know for a fact other foodbanks are struggling.

"We are busy and we provide a good service, and it's made that so much easier."
