RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 761 prime lambs to £133 / 304.7ppk; 248 ewes to £160 and 175 store pigs to £100.

Prime lambs (auctioneer-Elfor Morris):

A pleasing SQQ of 260ppk at Ruthin on the day with an entry of 761 lambs.

There was a market average per head of £103 with all weights keenly bid for.

Top end 42s to 48kg still rewarded from 270ppk to 300ppk.

Medium weight and lights probably a shade better than the previous week.

48.5kg at £133 by B Jones, Plas Harri.

50kg at £132 by A Homersley, Gwernymynydd Farm.

45kg at £132 by Hitchmough, Pant y Mel.

Top priced per kilo:

43kg at 304.7ppk by G L Jones, Maes Annod.

43kg at 300ppk by Ifan Hughes, Fourcrossed.

45kg at 293.3ppk by Hitchmough, Pant y Mel.

Lights to 256.3ppk, av 246.9ppk; Standards to 279.5ppk, av 255.5ppk; Mediums to 304.7ppk, av 262.2ppk; Heavies to 276.6ppk, av 252.6ppk; Overs to 225.9ppk, av 224.7ppk.

SQQ 260ppk; Overall average 258.7ppk.

Cull ewes (auctioneer-Paul Roberts):

Mostly Welsh in on the day hence the average of £47.20.

Top priced ram: £160 for a Lleyn from P Roberts, Stryt Lydan Farm.

Top price ewe: £127 for a Texel from Mark Hewitt, Racecourse Land.

Hampshire rams to £139; Xbred rams to £126; Texel rams to £114; Dorset rams to £90; Crossbred ewes to £121; Mule ewes to £95; Strong Welsh ewes to £85; Chev ewes to £75.

Overall average £47.20.

Store pigs (auctioneer-Elfor Morris):

A total of 175 forward on the day with a lot of weaners.

Best of these up to £34 for bunches of Gilts with bunches of boars harder to place, £10-£18 generally.

Barren Sows from £50 to £100 a little better than of late.

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of one bull to 2,700gns; three cows & calves to £1,440; 15 heifers to £1,270; 40 steers to £1,390; 10 OTMs to £1,867.50 / 200ppk; 72 calves to £370; 36 stirks to £900; 402 store lambs to £102 and 50 breeding ewes to £140.

Store cattle (auctioneer-Dafydd Parry):

As expected, those younger grazing cattle proved slightly easier.

Older stronger cattle, no matter what breed, were an excellent trade.

A tally of 15 heifers topped at £1,270 for a 25 month Limousin heifer from H Ll & M J Davies a'u mab, Bryn Cnap.

25 month Lim - £1,220; 25 month AA - £1,210; 26 month BB - £1,140; 16 month Lim - £900; 15 month Char - £845.

Overall average £968.93.

A total of 40 steers forward topped at £1,390 for a 20 month BB steer from M Davies, Clwt Grugor, followed by three 24 month olds for £1,380 by J T Stanyer & Sons, Ty Ucha.

21 month Lim - £1,340; 24 month AA - £1,300; 20 month Char - £1,235; 16 month Lim - £1,165.

Overall average £1,130.26.

Top price per kilo went to R G Thomas, Wern for a 50 month Lim (640kg) at 200ppk.

37 month Lim - 420kg - 174ppk; 167 month WB - 775kg  - 162ppk; 58 month BB - 570kg - 156ppk; 37 month Her - 495kg - 142ppk; 63 month Her - 535kg - 134ppk; 97 month BB - 630kg - 124ppk; 139 month BB - 520kg - 118ppk; 144 month BB - 610kg - 110ppk.

Overall average £950.86p / 150.5ppk.

16 month Pedigree Lim bull from Haulfryn Farming sold for 2,700gns.

Cows & calves (auctioneer-Dafydd Parry):

Hereford 4th Calver with Char bull calf at foot sold for £1,440 from A Williams, Hendre Fawr.

The next breeding sale is on August 11.

A lift in trade for all types.

Older bulls particularly in strong demand.

Top price went to C & H V Parry, Sychdyn, selling a Lim Hfr to £425 and a BB bull for £420.

Lim bulls to £340; Lim heifers to £280; BB bulls to £370; BB heifers to £270; HF bulls to £275; AA bulls to £200.

Weanlings (auctioneer-Dafydd Parry):

Keen bidding for all ages. Plenty more are required.

Several buyers returned home with empty trailers.

Top price of £900 went to Jones Bros, Lilac Cottage for a 10 month old Lim bullock.

Other prices:

10 month BB heifers £835; 10 month Lim bullock £790; 4 month Her bullocks £430; 4 month Lim heifers £555; 6 month Char bullock £635.

Store ewes (auctioneer-Paul Roberts):

Please note the first sale of breeding ewes through the new sale ring is at 3pm this Thursday, August 11.

Approximately 1,000 will be forward, being mostly Suff x and Tex x Yearlings, some full mouth.

Meanwhile, 50 breeding ewes were in on the day.

Top price of £140 went to W L Evans, Dinorben for a Suff full mouth.

X/Bred Full mouth £136; Texel Full mouth £130.

Overall average £119.62.

Store lambs (auctioneer-Elfor Morris):
A total of 400 store lambs forward as the change in weather bought a more buoyant trade, plenty more could have been sold.

Top price went to Evans & Co, Bryndu, achieving £102 for Texel Ewe Lambs also achieving £93.50 for Ram lambs.

Mule rams to £66; Welsh ewes to £61.50; Welsh ram lambs to £52.

Overall average £61.52.

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 1,271 prime lambs to £152 / 348.8ppk and 892 cull ewes & rams to £200.

Prime lambs (auctioneer-Elfor Morris):

A total of 1,271 lambs forward to an SQQ of 274ppk.

Less numbers obviously helping the trade, with 654 medium weight lambs (mostly corn fed) stealing the show at 280ppk.

Standards at 264ppk and heavies at 270ppk, or back up to the £130 plus mark.

Hardly any lights in on the day as producers breathe a sigh of relief with the welcomed rain.

A good trade on bigger ewes, Welsh in their wool harder to sell.

Overall average £65.70.
