THE sentencing of a Caernarfon man for the ‘one-punch’ assault of a former partner has been deferred for five months while he proves he can pay her compensation.

Jamie Goodall, 43 and of Pool Street, was told by Recorder Darren Bould at Caernarfon Crown Court on Friday, February 24, that he had passed the custody threshold for assaulting his then partner while her child slept upstairs.

But he also gave Goodall, who was hooked on non-prescription painkillers when he attacked her at the home they shared, an opportunity to pay around £1,500 a month compensation to help pay for repair dental work caused by the assault.

Prosecutor David Mainstone had told the court that on September 15 last year, the victim woke to an inebriated Goodall downstairs, leading to her trying to throw out the drugs he had bought online.

This led to him assaulting, punching in the chest and causing her to fall backwards, leaving her with bruising all over her body and having to have four top teeth removed, costing her £9,000.

The court also heard that she has been left without confidence and unable to work.

Richard Edwards, defending, explained that the defendant had accepted his victim’s version of events, despite the painkillers causing a loss of memory, and had pleaded guilty once it was explained to him.

He also told the court that Goodall was now only on properly-proscribed medication.

Recorder Boulder accepted the offer of deferring sentencing and with Goodall’s consent, set out two conditions before turning to court in July this year.

He said: “Your barrister is right to say it has passed the custody threshold meaning you would expect to be jailed for your assault.

“That was the sentence I had in mind to put on you but now your background and the positive things said on your behalf, and the chance that you can provide reparation.

“There are going to be two conditions to this deferment to July next year when I return to this case.

“I need your consent to the conditions that you can make reparations your victim has occurred for dental work.

“I’m told you intend to pay £1,500 a month to her through your solicitors and the court expects to see that in July.

“A second condition is that you put your dependency on painkillers behind you and I want your GP to show that any painkillers you are on are from them.

“If you meet those two conditions then the sentence could be suspended.”

Goodall will also be given conditional bail of not contacting his victim, directly or indirectly, or even enter their name into a computer and to not enter Bangor or Penrhosgarnedd, where the offence took place.
