A village corner shop was the only one out of seven tested that sold alcohol to children in a police test-purchase operation.

A cashier at Park Stores, Upper Heyford, near Bicester, was fined £80 after selling alcohol to an underage shopper on Thursday last week.

The Village Store in Steeple Aston, Launton Village Shop, Launton, and Tesco Express stores in Bowmont Square, Nightingale Place, Holm Square and Hart Place, all in Bicester, all passed.

The test-purchase operation was part of efforts to reduce underage drinking and related antisocial behaviour in the area.

It was the first time that a test operation had been carried out at any of the stores.

Oxfordshire licensing officer Tony Cope said: “This type of operation is carried out using intelligence we have gathered from local communities about underage drinking in specific areas, and we target premises we think might be providing the alcohol.

“Not only are we enforcing the licensing laws, but it also helps to tackle alcohol-fuelled anti-social behaviour by young people in these areas.”

Anyone with information on drink being sold to those who are underage should contact police on 08458 505505 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
