How Denbigh can become dementia friendly

The meeting organised by the Alzheimer’s Society was designed to explain what a dementia friendly

community is and how Denbigh residents could get involved.

The meeting held at the Hub in Smithfield Street at the end of January, was attended by local residents, business people, North Wales Police and representatives from Denbighshire county council.

Speakers included the Roy Tickle, Mayor of Denbigh, Jo Lane the dementia friendly communities coordinator from the Alzheimer’s society and local resident, Doris Roberts, who read a piece written by a local carer.

A dementia friendly community is a city, town or village that has been recognised by the Alzheimer’s Society – for understanding, respecting and supporting those living with dementia and where everyone can feel confident in contributing to community life.

For Denbigh to be recognised as ‘working towards being dementia friendly a steering group needs to be set up to drive the initiative forward.

Further dementia friends’ information sessions will be held on Monday February 19 for local people at the Hub at 11am (in English) and at 6pm (one in English and one in Welsh).

The Alzheimer’s Society’s dementia friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia and it aims to transform the way the nation thinks, talks and acts about the condition.
