Wales’s newest and fastest growing independent school is to offer scholarships covering up to 100% of academic fees for exceptionally gifted students following recent significant investment from China.

Myddelton College, in Denbigh, is making a limited number of these Headteacher Scholarships available.

It comes after Myddelton secured new investment partners in China with a landmark agreement signed during Prime Minister Teresa May’s trade mission to the country earlier this month.

Headteacher Mark Roberts said Myddelton College was delighted to be able to use some of the initial new investment to fund new scholarships opportunities.

“We’re committed to widening access to independent schooling, creating greater opportunities for developing talent and strengthening our links with the local community,” he said.

“We are very pleased to be able to offer a small number of new Headteacher Scholarships of up to 100% in recognition of excellence.

“A pupil who is in receipt of a Headteacher’s Scholarship is required to work hard, contribute positively to college life, be a credit to the college and set a good example by demonstrating the qualities that we expect from our students - resilience, scholarship and fellowship.

“Candidates are expected to show academic ability and resilience in order to balance the pace and demands of the broad curriculum with the fulfilment of academic potential.”

Scholarships for the 2018-2019 student entry are available for drama, music, art, sport and academic excellence.

All students must show academic ability. Candidates will initially be expected to submit an essay on a subject they are passionate about, together with their chosen area of excellence.

They will then be invited to attend the college during Scholarship Week, March 19 to 23, where they will sit academic tests, followed by an interview with the headteacher, a tour of the school and a meeting with the head of department for their chosen area of excellence.

Candidates will also be expected to provide a recent school report showing academic attainment levels and an outstanding reference from their current school.
