BALA Town continued their impressive start to the JD Welsh Premier League season with a convincing 2-1 home win over Llandudno.

The Lakesiders now occupy fourth position in the standings after an efficient display against Iwan Williams’ new-look squad, and the title hopefuls face another huge week of action in their quest for silverware that begins with a trip to Flint Town United in the Nathaniel MG Cup on Tuesday.

This will be followed by a tricky trip to newly promoted Caernarfon Town in front of the S4C cameras on Friday night, with the Cofis emerging as the season’s surprise package after an outstanding start to life in the top flight.

The home side made a strong start and almost went ahead on two occasions during the opening exchanges when Stuart L. Jones and Nathan Burke both spurned opportunities during an impressive spell.

Tudno began to impose themselves on the contest soon after and former Lakesider Mark Connolly wasted two good opportunities which included a header wide from six yards from a Zyacc Edwards cross.

Edwards was called into action at the other end when he blocked a goalbound effort from Steven Tames, but Colin Caton’s men finally broke the deadlock on 36 minutes when Jones prodded home from close range following a goalmouth scramble.

After the break saw the hosts lay siege to the Tudno goal in the early stage of the second period, with Tames seeing his strike saved by Shaun Pearson after neat build-up play from midfield talisman Henry Jones.

Their perseverance finally paid off on 59 minutes when substitute Ian Sheridan made an instant impact by releasing Henry Jones, who fired a powerful drive past Pearson from seven yards to double the advantage.

George Harry’s thunderbolt flew narrowly over to deny the away side a route back into the contest shortly after the setback, with Henry Jones almost notching his second of the evening but fluffed his lines with only Pearson to beat.

A nervy end to proceedings was ensured on 85 minutes when striker Alfons Fosu-Mensah produced a composed finish to reduce the arrears, but Town managed to hold on in the face of consistent pressure in the closing stages to emerge victorious.
